Before the first world war,
the inhabitants didn’t lack opportunity to celebrate Saint Valentin. The day begins with a mass in which participated a dozen of priests and the whole population. Then they went in procession on the streets of the town, behind the Saint banner, before coming back singing toward the Church . In 1965, Saint-Valentin
festival was instituted. The national lottery itself came in Chateauroux to draw for Saint-Valentin winning number. The artist Peynet, the famous illustrator of the lovers, used to create at this period a new drawing for the village each year. Today, the festival is only celebrated in the village. The inhabitants spend several weeks to decorate their houses covered with flowers. Sunday the nearest to 14th February, the lovers of all ages give an appointement here. Among them, notably Austrians and Japaneses, stroll in the village’s street guided by the sound of hurdy-gurdy and bagpipes, or wander through the paths of the lovers garden, converted in 1989. The engaged who are married during the year and the jubiless who celebrated their silver, golden, diamond weddings have the place of honour ; they join the church behind the saint statue to listen to the mass and take part in drawing lots of the presents. During two days, postcards, flames and stamps are sold in the temporary post-office, established for the circonstance. Ball, banquet and fonfair followed throughout this winter day, and the souvenir shop welcomed crowds of amateurs of products bearing the quality label : "The garden of lovers, Saint-Valentin". At night, when the festival is over, all can leave the lovers village with the heart of heat and trust of Saint-Valentin intercession. |
