The seigneuryThe history of Saint ValentinThe revolutionary period

14th September 1738, "Messire Louis Ruby, priest of Saint- Valentin, attended by fellow members in the neighbourhood and a large number of persons of different sex, ages and conditions", welcomed the cardinal of La Rochefoucauld, archbishop of Bourges.

The report doesn’t inform us about the population but gives us a detailed description about the conditions of the church and graveyard.

For instance, the aisle of the church wasn’t tiled or panelled and the bells were simply hung on the frame, thus "when they were rung, no one could hear in the church".

The graveyard wasn’t maintained any better because "the railings and the bases on which they rested were totally rotten", so that "livestock went freely back and forth".

Before leaving, the archbishop gave his instructions to the priest in order to improve the situation.
